Lidl have applied to build a new store on land currently occupied by derelict industrial units opposite the Avon factory, north of New Broughton Road.

The application went to planning committee on June 5th with a recommendation for permission, conditional on highway improvements and a puffin crossing to help pedestrian access.

However the application was strongly opposed by Melksham district councillors. According to cllrs Wiltshire, Eaton, Mudge and Griffiths, "The proposal...will not enhance this important site or make best use of the location in terms of the regeneration of this area of Melksham."

Melksham town council have not objected, but have asked for restrictions on delivery times, signage and use of the car park.

The planning committee resolved to defer the application partly for a site visit, and also to reconsult the town council, with a view to resolving the apparent differences of opinion between Melksham's town and district representatives.

The application will return to planning committee on July 10th, with a site meeting taking place at 5pm the same day.
