Recycle Week is 2-9 June

9.33.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 21st May 2008

West Wiltshire Council is teaming up with Kennet Council and Wiltshire County Council to promote Recycle Week, taking place from 2 - 9 June.

Recycling happens all around the district, everyday, but there is always one more thing we can recycle to help save resources, energy and prevent waste being sent to landfill.

This year Recycle Week is trying to encourage everybody to shop SMART (Save Money And Reduce Trash) by using our local independent traders to spend less money on fuel, reduce emissions and cut down on the amount of waste we bring into the household.

Road shows will be giving information about how you can recycle extra materials by using your black kerbside collection box. The show is touring the district during Recycle Week, appearing during the morning on Tuesday 3rd at Sainsbury's in Melksham, Wednesday 4th in The Shires in Trowbridge and Thursday 5th at the Co-op in Westbury.

To support local independent traders in Wiltshire, the councils have organised a special shopping challenge called Spot the Recycle Swoosh. Separate competitions are being run in Bradford on Avon, Devizes, Marlborough, Melksham, Trowbridge, Warminster and Westbury.

Five local independent businesses in each town will be displaying the Recycle for Wiltshire jute bag in their shop windows. Spot all five and you could be in line for a prize.

One grand prize winner will be drawn for all of Wiltshire. They will receive a family guided tour around the Wadworth Brewery in Devizes and a visit to the Shire Horses and Sign Writing Studio. There will also be prizes for each individual town and the runners-up.

Look out for posters and entry forms in libraries, schools, Parish and Town councils, community groups, the shops themselves, leisure centres and Tourist Information Centres. More information can be found on www.westwiltshire.gov.uk or by calling 01225 776655.

Linda Conley, West Wiltshire's portfolio holder for the environment said: "By shopping SMART we can combat many important issues. It helps tackle climate change - 20 per cent of our emissions are related to the production, processing, transportation and storage of food.

"It also boosts local trade. Spending £10 in a local business generates £25 for the local area, compared with only £14 for the same amount spent in a supermarket. Recycle Week is an ideal way to highlight these issues, and remind us all to reduce, reuse and recycle."

Recycle Week 2008 is a national campaign co-ordinated by the Waste Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and this year is aiming to inspire people to recycle 'just one more thing'. It's about showing residents that recycling can be easy, it does benefit the environment and everyone's individual contribution will make a big difference.

Further information on Recycle Week 2008 is available from www.recyclenow.com. Information on all WRAP's programmes can be found at www.wrap.org.uk.

John of Gaunt secondary school in Trowbridge will be taking part in a photo opportunity to use in a press release during Recycle Week itself. It will involve the pupils (hopefully wearing green) being arranged into a giant 'swoosh' shape, and an aerial photo being taken. This is part of a national event where, if downloaded to the Recycle Now website, the photo will be included in a huge 'swoosh' created from every photo sent in from across the country.
